Why You’ll Love This Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse

Who knew cottage cheese could turn into such a tasty chocolate dessert? Seriously, once you try it this way, you’ll see why it’s worth keeping a tub in your fridge!

This cottage cheese chocolate mousse is sweet, smooth, and super creamy. You won’t even notice that familiar lumpy texture once everything is blended together. It turns into a rich chocolate treat that tastes more like a creamy pudding than plain cottage cheese.

The best part is that you only need four simple ingredients, and there’s no baking involved. Just toss everything into a blender or food processor, blend until smooth, and you’re good to go. It’s an easy way to satisfy your chocolate cravings while adding some extra protein to your day.

Cottage cheese is great to keep on hand because it has a mild flavor, plenty of protein, and a creamy texture once blended. You can use it in all kinds of recipes, from quick snacks and dips to sweet desserts.

And yes, it works just as well in chocolate mousse! Once you blend it with cocoa powder, honey, and vanilla, the cottage cheese flavor becomes much milder. The mousse turns out smooth and creamy, with a hint of cheesecake flavor that pairs perfectly with the chocolate. It’s a pretty tasty way to enjoy cottage cheese!

Ingredients

  1. Cottage cheese: Cottage cheese is of course our secret ingredient. You can use whatever you favorite cottage cheese is, I prefer Good Culture small curd full-fat cottage cheese (4%) for the best creamy texture. If you use fat free cottage cheese, the texture will be less creamy.
  2. Unsweetened cocoa powder: Cocoa powder is what makes the mousse chocolate-y. If you like a dark chocolate flavor, add more!
  3. Honey: You can use any liquid sweetener of choice that you enjoy. Maple syrup will also work, but the flavor and sweetness level will be different. If you want a sugar-free option, try a liquid sweetener like allulose.
  4. Vanilla extract: Just a small amount of vanilla extract adds more flavor to the mousse.

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a food processor or high speed blender. You can also use an immersion blender in a tall cylinder container.
  2. Blend together on high until mouse is completely smooth. Note: If it looks grainy, keep blending!
  1. Top with whipped cream, fruit, or chocolate shavings!

Note: I find that it has a fluffier texture immediately after blending. If you want it to be more like a cottage cheese chocolate pudding, place in the refrigerator to firm up for about 20-30 minutes before serving.

Storage info: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Recipe FAQ

Is this a healthy dessert?

As a dietitian, I’m not anti-dessert (sometimes you need the real deal, and that’s okay!). But if you’re looking for a sweet treat that has a little more bang for its buck nutritionally, this is a great option with 15 g of protein per serving to keep you full and support any protein goals you have.

How do I get my cottage cheese smoother?

If you’re cottage cheese is grainy, try blending it for longer! I find that the extra minutes of blending really make a big difference in the smoothness of the mousse. If needed (some blenders/food processors may not be powerful enough), add a splash of milk or heavy cream to help it blend smoothly.

Notes

  • Use a high powered blender or food processor. This will help achieve the smooth classic mousse consistency.
  • Use full-fat or whole milk cottage cheese, 4% milk fat for the best texture. Drain any excess liquid before blending, especially if your cottage cheese has a lot of liquid at the top.
  • If your mousse is too thin or runny, allow to set in the fridge to thicken up for at least an hour, as cottage cheese can become runnier as it gets warmer. You can also add 1 tbsp of chia seeds or flax seeds to thicken the mixture more immediately.
